Novar is currently developing Solar Park Betuwelijn together with energy cooperative Drechtse Energie and the landowner. The solar park will be located directly next to the railway line and will cover an area of over 12 hectares.

Novar is currently developing a solar park alongside a section of the Betuwe railway line, in collaboration with energy cooperative Drechtse Energie. The project covers a total of 12.7 hectares, with significant space dedicated to ecological integration. With 22,400 solar panels, the park will generate enough renewable energy to supply around 4,600 households with green electricity.
More information about the project can be found on the project page of the Drechtsteden Denk Mee! Solar farm Betuwelijn (drechtstedenenergie.nl).
Novar has designed this solar park with a strong focus on multifunctional land use and preserving the character of the landscape and local ecological environment. For example, the landowner’s sheep will be able to graze beneath the panels, and specific measures will be taken to enhance biodiversity within the project area. The site will be made more attractive to insects and other wildlife by adding native shrubs, flower- and herb-rich grassland, butterfly banks, ponds, and natural reed edges. Additionally, the eastern tip of the site is too narrow for solar panels, allowing for the implementation of extra ecological features in that area.
In addition to the environmental permit for the solar park, a permit has also been granted for a battery. Novar is currently exploring the practical possibilities of installing the battery at the solar park. The battery can help relieve pressure on the energy grid when energy supply exceeds demand, allowing the generated electricity to be used more efficiently.
By developing a solar park close to existing infrastructure, we make optimal use of this piece of land. By focusing on biodiversity within the park, we not only support the energy transition but also strengthen the surrounding environment. In addition, we aim for 50% local ownership of the park, ensuring that residents directly benefit from the energy produced.

The permit application was approved by the municipality and was open for public inspection for six weeks without any objections being filed. This means that the environmental permits for Solar Park and BESS Betuwelijn are now irrevocable and therefore final. Additionally, the SDE++ subsidy has been granted.
