Flexible storage for green energy

Avermieden Battery – Eekerpolder

Projecten » Avermieden Battery – Eekerpolder

In the municipality of Oldambt, Novar together with Solar Proactive and Emmett Green is developing the Avermieden Battery, a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 22 MW / 91 MWh. The battery will be built in the middle of Eekerpolder Solar Park, the largest solar park in the Netherlands, and will be directly connected to the Closed Distribution System (CDS) Avermieden.
With this project, we are taking a major step towards a flexible and reliable energy system that makes optimal use of solar and wind power and helps tackle grid congestion across the region.

About the battery

Location

The battery is being built within Eekerpolder Solar Park. The site is centrally located, east of the Closed Distribution System (CDS) and north of the cable corridor. The existing manure basin on the site has been relocated, creating the space needed for this new battery system.

What does the battery look like?

The battery installation covers an area of more than 1,100 square metres. It will consist of three identical modules with lithium-ion battery containers, connected to inverters, transformers, and an Energy Management System (EMS). The design is modular, allowing for future expansion. The entire system will be integrated into the existing energy infrastructure of the solar park.

GDS Avermieden

The Avermieden Battery is strategically connected to the Avermieden CDS, which provides 650 MVA of feed-in capacity and 200 MVA of off-take capacity. This enables the battery to operate efficiently alongside the Eekerpolder Solar Park and future renewable energy projects in the region.

Thanks to its storage capacity, the battery can:

  • Play an important role in reducing grid congestion in the Northern Netherlands.
  • Balance peaks and dips in solar energy production.
  • Contribute to a stable and reliable electricity grid.

How does this battery project contribute to the energy transition?

The Avermieden Battery makes it possible to use more solar and wind energy in practice. By temporarily storing renewable electricity, the battery can supply power when demand is high. This prevents energy waste, reduces grid congestion and strengthens the reliability of the electricity network. In this way, the project directly contributes to a cleaner and future-proof energy system.
